Common misconception about the gym.

Writer: Rural Strength and ConditioningRural Strength and Conditioning

A common misconception we see from people coming to the gym, either new to training or coming from another gym, is that you need to work off your food. Yes, you need to be in a calorie deficit if you want to have fat loss but there is so much more about going to the gym then burning calories. If you are hitting multiple fitness classes a day or never taking a rest day for fear of calorie surplus, then you are more than likely adding more stress to your life than fitness.

If you are hyper focused on calories in/out then typically what we see is individuals that over train and do excessive cardio but never see any body changes.

If we can shift that focus to strength training, building muscle, eating enough to support your lifestyle, and getting enough rest between workouts, we will start to see great body changes.

These are important because:

1.       Muscle helps us to be resilient. Skeletal muscle has been proven to help keep you physically and cognitively resilient as you age.

2.       Be strong enough to do the things in life you want to do. Want to run and play with your kids as you age? Focus on building muscle.

3.       Muscle burns more calories during everyday life than fat does.

4.       Eating enough (especially protein) helps to recover from workouts and leave you feeling energized.

5.       Resting, meaning getting enough sleep and recovering between workouts, needs to happen or gains will not be made.

Our bodies and muscles need to have appropriate recovery between workouts so they can build back stronger than they were before.

So if you have found yourself in a cycle of hitting multiple fitness classes a day or not having a least 1 day of full activity rest a week, you are most likely not seeing the body composition changes that you like.

If this feels like you, book a consult today. We can help you get on a strength building plan rather than a calorie burning plan.
