Ditch the New Year's Resolutions and start hitting your goals!

Updated: Jan 23

Here we are, at the end of January. Did you know that January 17th is considered the day people already ditch their new year’s resolution?

The year starts off with high motivation and a big goal.

“I am going to workout every day this year”

“I am going to lose 20lbs in 2026”

“ I am going to …”

The problem is these are usually too big of a goal in too long of a time limit. Motivation starts to dwindle; something comes up like a trip or family celebration that throws you off track and you throw in the towel.

You remember being in school; if there was a big project due in a month- you would not start it the day you got the assignment. No, you would wait until the night before to start it. Same with goals. If you give yourself the year to do it- well, you are not going to stay motivated the whole year to get it done.

So does this mean setting big goals is pointless? Absolutely not! But let’s set smaller goals that will help us get to the bigger ones.

“I want to workout every day this year” can be broken down to: “I am going to move my body for at least 15 minutes, 3 days a week for 2 weeks” Once this becomes a habit, then let’s move it to 4 days a week for 3 weeks. Then bump it to 30 minutes of activity 4 days a week etc.

“I’m going to lose 20 lbs in 2026” ok, let’s start by adding in a fruit or veggie at every meal for 2 weeks. Then let’s have a protein source at every meal for 2 weeks.

After you have conquered one smaller goal, go on to the next small goal and the next one and so forth.

Eventually, you will have crushed all of these small goals, and they will have helped you reach your really big goal for the year.

This is also why a big part of our coaching revolves around habits. Small daily habits push the needle in a big way when we are consistently doing them over months and years.

So in 2026, avoid New Year’s resolutions. Go for the short, small goals and see how much you’ll succeed.

Need some help with these goals and accountability? Book a goal review and let’s get started!
